Botanical garden, Kirkwood Magic House, Forest Park & the Science Museum, Laumier sculpture park, in summer all the neighborhood pools are open, in a pinch a trip to PetCo or the play area at an indoor mall can be good for a little diversion on a cold day

"Zoo - great fun for kids, we often go for just 1-2 hours, free
Science Center - good for winter fun, we're really into spacecraft right now and dinosaurs
Train Store - 8151 Delmar - great Thomas table with many trains to play with (of course I always feel guilty and end up buying something)"

The Botanical garden with its adventure playground is great, but hard if you have two children who are at different levels to follow them both around. Same for the Magic House in Kirkwood -- though it is not to be missed.  The zoo is always great entertainment, as is the Butterfly House and Grant's Farm.
